My Greek Christmas: Memories, Traditions, and a Winter Folk Story
Γεια σας! Today I want to share something special from our latest Greek at Heart Podcast episode about Christmas traditions.
When Dimitris and I sat down to record this episode, I had no idea how many memories would come flooding back. We started talking about past and current traditions - by the way, did you know that Christmas trees are actually a relatively new tradition in Greece?
My mother had told me that they didn’t decorate the house at all, let alone a tree. Instead, she fondly remembers the warmth of the fireplace, the new shoes kids got for Christmas and the special food & baked treats the women in the family made.
In the past, the church used to be the most important event for the Christmas celebration in Greece, and kids eagerly awaited for the carols.
Our conversation with Dimitris took me back to my childhood holidays in the village, where we would also sing κάλαντα (carols) to our family and neighbours. As per tradition, we would earn a little pocket money - enough for a child.
It’s heartwarming to think that there is a continuity through these traditions, and even though many things change, other stay the same.
Dimitris shared his own memories about how gifts were given to kids without the popular “Santa” story of the latest decades, and his aunt's Christmas baking: in the island of Crete, ξεροτήγανα are a local treat she made with fried dough and honey.
Another favourite moment in the episode is the winter folk tale about κυρα-Καλή (lady Kind) I’m sharing with you. As all folk tales start in Greek: "Μια φορά κι έναν καιρό..." (Once upon a time...) - you’ll hear about this kind woman who meets a mysterious family in the woods. Despite her hardship, she always has kind words to share with everyone.
